Caribbean Whiptail Stingray

Synonyms: Himantura schmardae, Trygon schmardae, Atlantic Chupare

 

 

 

Styracura schmardae occurs in the southern Bahamas, the Greater and Lesser Antilles, the southern Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean coast of Central America, and the Atlantic coast of northern South America east to Ceará (Brazil). This species inhabits shallow sea waters over sandy and muddy substrates, e.g., in estuaries; at depths 0-30 m. Large oval-shaped stingray (disc width up to 180-200 cm); relatively short tail with a single spine; dark brown to olive above and yellowish-white below. Overfished and endangered, especially in northern South America.
